Zermatt is one of the most beautiful resorts in Europe, with stunning views everywhere you look. It is not a place for beginners, as the mountain consists of long winding runs, steep moguls and vast off-piste terrain. It’s a place to hone your skills and challenge yourself, not a place to learn. The village is truly wonderful, and has a lively, happening feel and restaurants that are second to none. That being said, it is quite expensive so this is not the place to go if you’re on a budget or are looking for a family vacation, skiing in Les Arcs would be a good option in that case.
The Mountain
Zermatt was discovered in the middle of the 19th century when alpinism was at its highest. Mountaineers loved the mountain and its surrounding peaks for its steep ascents and scenic views. While it has been developed more in recent years, it is still a popular place for climbers. Zermatt is also very popular with intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders. The wonderful thing about this resort is that you can ski it year round as the high altitude means there is always snow on the mountains. The mountain also has moonlight ski runs, heli-skiing, freerides, terrain parks and more. There really is something for every type of skier and boarder.
Restaurants
The great skiing here is not the only draw, the food in Zermatt is really something. Both the mountain and the village boast some of the tastiest gastronomic treats of any European ski resort. The on-mountain restaurants are found scattered throughout the peaks and offer a variety of really tasty foods. Check out the Alm for tasty local fare where you can order fresh trout from the pond right there. Another restaurant not to miss is Zum See where you can choose from different fresh pastas, gourmet meats, locally picked salads, homemade pastries and more. For dining in the town at night, you will be spoilt for choice. There are different cuisines from around the world, so be sure to ask your hotel for recommendations.
Nightlife
One thing that people love about skiing in Europe is the fantastic nightlife. People love to ski hard and party hard, and with all the clubs and bars available in Zermatt, you can party the night away every night. There are over a hundred options to choose from, so whether you want to sip a little bubbly at a champagne bar or dance to visiting DJ’s late into the night, you really have your pick. There is even a tex mex bar where you can enjoy some delicious margaritas.
