Tignes Skiing

The villages around this resort are sweet, charming and have a very traditional feel. The main hub of the resort is Tignes-le-Lac which is split into two sub resorts. This is the area where you will find pedestrian-only roads, many different lifts and a powerful gondola. The lifts give you access to a huge variety of terrain as well as some of the best snow in Europe. Tignes also has some really great accommodations that are affordable and convenient, with quick access to the village and lifts. Many of the offerings are similar to those in ski Chamonix, France.

The Mountain

One really great aspect of Tignes is the abundant snow. The mountain gets dumped on every year, and even has year-round runs. This means there is always a good base and fantastic snow cover from top to bottom. Tignes also has the best lift access to off-piste terrain. This means you won’t have to traverse for miles or end up hiking to find some good, backcountry runs. The mountain is also great for intermediate skiers and boarders as there are plenty of open runs, easy off-piste and great snow. While there are some nursery runs, there aren’t very many good runs for beginners to progress to. For those snowboarders and skiers looking to try out some tricks, Tignes has a great terrain park that is full of rails, kickers, gaps and half pipes. It was one of the first French resorts to build a terrain park, and the resort takes pride in this. There is even a mini park, free airbag jump and a boardercross.

Dining

Tignes has some really great restaurants that are scattered throughout the mountain and village. On the mountain, you will want to dine at Lo Soli at the top of the Chaudannes chair. Here you can sit on the terrace to enjoy views of the Grande Motte while dining on warm, scrumptious traditional foods. In town, you will have many different choices for eating out. If you are in the mood for some delicious pizza, head over to The Arbina where you will get great food and fantastic service. For a romantic experience, head to the Val Claret where you will enjoy exquisitely presented food in an intimate cellar setting.

Après Ski

Some have complained that Tignes does not party as hard as other European resorts, but that’s because they don’t know where to look. Right after the slopes close, there are plenty of bars that offer great happy hours and get busy early on. Two great places to relax and unwind are Grizzly’s and the whisky lounge in the Couloir. However, expect to pay high prices for the ambiance, look for ski deals here at Great Skiing. Another really fun place to grab a drink with friends after a long day is the Crowded House.
