Red Mountain Skiing

Red Mountain is relatively small by western standards, but it offers some of the best tree and deep powder runs around. The resort is also small, but that’s part of its appeal. It’s a mountain that’s gained a sort of cult-status with skiers and boarders who like challenging terrain and empty lift lines. Fernie and its ski community offers great powder and variety for those looking for another alternative. It is also very friendly, and has a very warm ambiance and laid back vibe.

The Mountain

Red Mountain only has 1,585 acres, but it packs a lot into that compact space. The mountain boasts some of the best tree runs in Canada, where you can strike gold when the conditions are right. On a powder day, you’ll find endless tree runs without skiing the same run twice. There are two mountains that make up the resort, Red Mountain and Granite Mountain. It’s true that the resort caters more towards the expert skier, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t great groomers for the more casual skier or snowboarder. The lifts are also a bit slow, but during the week you’ll basically have them to yourself. They also give you access to some really great skiing and backcountry, off-piste trails and runs.

The Village

The main village that gives you access to Red Mountain is the town of Rossland. Rossland is a century-old mining town that still retains its old western charm. The population is less than 4,000, and there is only one red light in the entire town. What is great about staying in the town is you will get a lot for your dollar. It is very affordable and you’ll get to dine at some really delicious restaurants that serve up local fare to be washed down with tasty wines. The vibe is very laid back, and you won’t find friendlier locals anywhere. If you prefer to be closer to the slopes, you can stay in one of many new condos that offer ski in ski out options.

Who Should Go

Red Mountain is not for everyone, but that is also part of the appeal. This is the ideal place for true powderhounds that enjoy steep tree runs, fluffy powder and empty lift lines. It’s also very affordable compared to other resorts, so it’s a great ski destination for families, ski bums and those who just don’t want to shell out too much cash on their next vacation.
